DNCC BY-ELECTION

AL plans to nominate party leader

Abu Jakir

The Bangladesh Awami League (AL) plans to nominate a party man as the mayoral candidate for THE Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election, which is to be held within the next 90 days. Party insiders said the AL high-ups had on the previous occasion selected a non-political person, Annisul Huq, for various reasons. But this time, they will nominate the mayoral candidate for the DNCC poll from within the party. They also said a party man who is eligible, competent and has a clean image might get the ticket for contesting the upcoming DNCC election. The local government and rural development and cooperatives ministry yesterday announced the DNCC mayoral post vacant, as its mayor, Annisul Huq, died at Wellington Hospital in London on November 30 after nearly three months of treatment. For the first time, the DNCC election is going to be held under the party banner. The last DNCC poll was held on April 28, 2015. Annisul Huq got the AL nomination and won by a big margin.

After his death, AL leaders, especially those close to AL president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office, have started discussing the matter. Certain names for the mayoral post are coming up.

Party office sources said this time the AL higher-ups will select the mayoral candidate from within the party as the DNCC poll is going to be held under the party banner for the first time.

The sources said Dhaka north unit AL president AKM Rahamatullah, its general secretary Sadek Khan, Sarah Begum Kabari, Kamal Ahmed Majumder and Saber Hossain Chowdhury might seek nomination for contesting the mayoral race.

Besides, there is a rumour in political circles that Annisul Huq’s wife, Rubana Huq, or son, Navidul Huq, might seek nomination to contest the upcoming local government polls.

Talking to the media earlier, Navidul Huq had said he wanted to complete his father’s unfinished tasks if he got a chance.

Talking to this correspondent, AL presidium member Lt Col (Retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan yesterday said it depends solely on party president Sheikh Hasina who will be the mayoral candidate.

When contacted, AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said yesterday that the party higher-ups will discuss the matter after Sheikh Hasina returns from Cambodia.

“It depends on the party president. But I think this time the party higher-ups will nominate a party man as mayoral candidate,” he noted.

Dhaka city AL leader Sadek Khan told The Independent yesterday that the AL higher-ups will select a party man for the mayoral race, as the DNCC election will be held under party banners this time. He also said he will seek nomination from the party for contesting the DNCC poll.

Former AL lawmaker Sarah Begum Kabari will seek nomination this time too, she told The Independent yesterday.
