Comilla city Juba Dal president arrested

Comilla: Police arrested two people, including the president of Comilla city unit Juba Dal, on Saturday night on charges of planning to commit acts of sabotage, reports UNB.

A team of Detective Branch of Police arrested the duo—Utbatul Bari Abu and Sharif—in front of Khorshed Alam Municipal Market on Laksam Road, said AKM Manjur Alam, officer-in-charge of DB police. Of the arrestees, Abu was wanted in six cases, the OC said adding that they were being interrogated at the local DB office.

FFs accorded reception

Ten freedom fighters were accorded reception at a daylong programme at Barisal Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city yesterday marking the month of victory. . The programmes included photo and documents exhibition, reception of freedom fighters and cultural function. The programme started by paying tribute to the liberation war martyrs by placing tribute at the monument of liberation war, arranged by ‘the audacious’, a youth forum, marking the on their foundation ceremony.

Wahiduzzaman, chief executive officer of Barisal City Corporation, inaugurated the programme while AH Tawfique, divisional chief of UNICEF, was the chief guest.

The second session was presided over by Syed Pantho, president of the Audacious. Prof Ziaul Haque, chairman Barisal Education Board, Habibur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Barisal, were guests of this session.

Ten freedom fighters named Sheikh Qutubuddin Ahmed, Mokhlesur Rahman, Mohiuddin Manik, Akkas Hossain, Nurul Alam Farid, Prodip Kumar Ghosh, Enayet Hossain Chowdhury, Razzak Bhuiya, Shahjahan Haoladar, and Abdul Barek Haoladar, were accorded reception in the programme. Later, a cultural programme was held.

Youth held ‘with pistol’

Police arrested a young man ‘along with a foreign pistol’ from Bhangna Hatkhola in Keraniganj on Saturday evening, reports UNB. Tipped off, police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Azizur Rahman Tushar, 28, son of M Azam of Amritpur village, ‘along with the pistol loaded with three bullets’. A case was filed with Keraniganj Model Police Station.

524 cases filed against unlicensed vehicles

A total of 524 cases were filed during a drive launched by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) against unfit and unlicensed vehicles from November 19 to 30, reports BSS. "An amount of Tk 14, 73,500 was fined in the drive" chief coordinator of the drive Quamrul Islam Chowdhury said yesterday. The drive will continue to stop movement of unfit and unlicensed vehicles on the streets, he said, adding, "Alongside drives against unfit and unlicensed vehicles, we are also launching drives against the drivers who have no license and minimum educational qualification to prevent road accidents." The drive is conducted at three points in the city every day.

Quamrul Islam said the drive is continuing against the vehicles above 20 years old to reduce traffic jam and any untoward incidents. DSCC Mayor Sayeed Hossain Khokan asked all authorities concerned to conduct the drives strictly for stopping any risky and unfair practices in the transport sectors. The Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (traffic), Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Department of Environment are jointly conducting drives.

Training on journalism begins

CHITTAGONG: A three-day foundation training course on journalism was inaugurated at Chittagong Press Club (CPC) auditorium yesterday. Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) and Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) jointly organised the training programme for the local journalists.

CUJ President Reaz Hayder Chowdhury presided over the inaugural session while Chairman of Chittagong Zila Parisad M A Salam attended the function as the chief guest. M A Salam said mass media, as the mirror of the society, plays a vital role in creating awareness among the people. CPC President Kolim Sarwar, Vice President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Shahidul Alam, CUJ General Secretary Mohammad Ali  spoke on the occasion.
