UP member hacked dead

Shariatpur: A member of Nagerpara union parishad in Gosairhatupazila was hacked to death on Thursday over previous enmity, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Nazrul Munsi, 45, member of ward No 5 of Nagerpara union parishad.

Quoting locals, police said Nazrul had been at loggerheads with Delwar Sareng, Masum Choukidar and Mohsin Sardar, residents of the area.

On Thursday evening, Nazrul, along with his relative Tazem Mridha and friend Ratan Peda, was returning home from Gosairhat riding a battery-run auto rickshaw.

When they reached Munsibazar, a group of 10/12 miscreants, including Delwar, Masum and Mohsin, waylaid the three-wheeler and swooped on the Nazrul and two others around 7pm, said officer-in-charge of Gosairhat Police Station Mehedi Masud. The miscreants hacked Nazrul, Tazem and Ratan, leaving the trio injured, the OC added.

Later, they were taken to Damudya Upazila Health Complex when doctors declared Nazrul dead. The injured were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as their conditions deteriorated.

Woman found dead in Mymensingh

Police recovered the body of a young housewife from Aamtoli area in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh on Thursday evening.

The deceased was Lovely Begum, 20, wife of Abdul Awal of village Taradangi in Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh.

Quoting local people, Mamun-or-rashid, officer-in-charge of Bhaluka Police Station said Lovely and her husband Abdul Awal used to work at a garment factory at Aamtoli. They used to reside in a rented house at Aamtoli.

Neighbours found Lovely hanging from the ceiling of her house in the evening and informed police.  On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy yesterday morning, the OC said. “The body bore no injury marks and primarily we are suspecting it is a suicidal case”, the OC informed.

But the causes behind the incident could not be known yet. An unnatural death case was lodged with Bhaluka Police Station in this connection.

Drug peddler jailed for 3 years

A court in Chandpur on Thursday sentenced a drug peddler to three years rigorous imprisonment for taking and selling phensidyl in Shahrasti upazila of the district.

The court also fined the condemned convict, Eshaque Mia, 32, of Katkamta villagein Kochua upazila, Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer in jail three months more.

According to the prosecution, police in a drive detained Eshaque along with 39 bottles of phensidyl at Shahrastion February 25, 2013. Later, a case was filed under Narcotics Control Act.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Mamunur Rashid handed down the verdict.

Two decomposed bodies found

Laxmipur: Two decomposed bodies were found in separate incidents at Sadar and Ramgati upazilas of the district on Wednesday and Thursday morning, reports UNB.

In Ramgati, locals found an unidentified youth body, 30, floating on the Meghna river at Chargazi area of Ramgati upazila on Thursday morning, and informed police, said officer-in-charge of Ramgati Police Station Iqbal Hossain.

In Mandari village of Sadar upazila, Mannan, 5, son of Kamal Uddin, had been missing since Monday afternoon. On Wednesday morning, locals found his decomposed body floating in a swamp adjoining their village and informed police.   

350 families get power connection

GOPALGANJ: Three hundred and fifty families from Krishnapur and Gopalpur villages under Muksudpur upazila were brought under electrification network by Gopalganj Palli Bidyut Samity yesterday.

A function was held in Gopalpur School field on the occasion. Faruk Khan, a presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League (AL), inaugurated the connection lines while participating at the function.

Mayor of Muksudpur municipality advocate Atikur Rahman presided over the function.
