3 Rohingyas held in Dhaka

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday detained three Rohingyas, including a child, from a house in Demra's signboard area of Dhaka. The elite force also detained a human trafficker on charges of attempting to send the Rohingyas to Malaysia from Cox's Bazar. The man who had sheltered the Rohingya refugees in his house was also arrested.

Later, a mobile court sentenced them to different jail terms. The three Rohingyas are Sitara Begum (25),  her daughter Shafika (6) and Zayeda Begum (16). The other detainees are  house-owner Mokhlesur Rahman and human trafficker Raju Mollah. The Rohingyas arrived in Bangladesh on September 3, after which the human trafficker had tried to create fake passports for them to send them to Malaysia. Capt. Shahabuddin Khan of RAB-10 (media division) told this to reporters at a press briefing in Kawran Bazar.

He said the house of Mokhlesur Rahman was raided in the presence of executive magistrate Gausul Azam yesterday morning. The three Rohingyas were found in the house.

Setara Begum's younger brother, Salimullah, had gone to Malaysia from Myanmar through illegal channels three years ago. About six months back, Zayeda Begum was married to Salimullah over telephone. From then, Zayeda was staying with Setara’s family. After entering Bangladesh, they took shelter at an unknown person's house at Swankhali, Teknaf. Later, they rented houses in Kolatoli area in Cox’s Bazar.

Salimullah met Rafiqul Islam, nephew of Raju Molla, in Malaysia. He asked Raju Mollah to arrange for sending his wife, sister and nephew to Malaysia.

On November 25, Raju Molla brought them to Keraniganj for processing their Bangladeshi passports.

On November 28, Raju tried to pass their passports through a passport broker in the Keraniganj, Jatrabari and Rayerbag regional passport offices.
