Seven Kushtia AL leaders’ firearm licenses revoked

UNB

Licenses for some 10 firearms belonging to seven ruling Awami League (AL) leaders here have been cancelled, for causing hindrance to public safety. Sources at the deputy commissioner office said district magistrate Syed Belal Hossain gave the direction yesterday, asking the authorities concerned to seize the firearms, reports UNB. The direction came after police on Sunday sent a report to the deputy commissioner seeking cancellation of the firearms licenses of several AL leaders for abusing their responsibility in carrying the guns.
The firearms include two of expelled AL leader Mominur Rahman Momiz, one of Swechhasebak League president Akhteruzzaman Labu, three of Swechhasebak League general secretary Sheikh Sazzad Hossain Sabuj, one of Mirpur municipal unit AL joint convener Wahid Joardar, one of Mirpur upazila AL education affairs secretary Mohammad Ali Joardar, one of Momiz’s associate Mostafizur Rahman Madhu. It is not learnt about the other gun and its owner.
On the other hand, police could not arrest the shooter Anisur Rahman, a former assistant sub-inspector of Kafrul Police Station in the capital, who was seen in a video clip firing bullets in front of police during the clash at Milpara in the district town on August 15.
Contacted, Kushtia police super Proloy Chisim said Anisur went into hiding after the incident, adding that they are trying to arrest him.
Police also said the shotgun, which was used for firing bullets by Anisur during the clash, was licensed in the name of the expelled AL leader Mominur Rahman Momiz.
