Nithor Mahbub’s ‘Life is Beautiful’ to be performed on his birthday

DL DESK

Today is the birthday of noted mime artiste Nithor Mahbub. He will celebrate the day in a befitting manner at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) today. He will cut the cake in a programme where three mime artists will be awarded with ‘Mime Art Award 2015’ for their contribution to the pantomime. Sammilita Sangskritik Jote president Golam Kuddus and recitation artiste Mir Borkat will attend the programme as guests.
Later, on the occasion of birthday, Nithor Mahbub will give a solo performance of mime ‘Life is Beautiful’ at the same place (BSA) today at 7pm. It is a production of the group Mime Art. The entire performance is about an hour and fifteen minutes and with the main story, five different pieces of mime acting have been added. Nithor Mahbub has created and directed it himself. Make up and music composition has been done by Shubashish Dutta Tonmoy and Henry is responsible for the lighting.
Through this speechless art has come up the real scenario of today’s Bangladesh. It has brought to light certain issues of the society such as the devaluation of morality amongst the youth, the craving to relive childhood memories, the process of getting rid of unemployment and many other social problems. ‘Life is Beautiful’ is the story of a boy who is determined to survive and overcomes every barrier on his way to reach his goals and fulfil his dreams.
In the main story, a young man is tired of looking for an appropriate job after completing his studies and at one point his girlfriend leaves him. His unemployment drives him to the point of suicide. Just before he is about to hang himself, he reminisces about some childhood memories. He goes back to the days when as a child, he flew kites, won games of kabadi, picking water lilies on a boat ride, fishing and so on. All these memories enlighten him. With a lot of mental strength, he decides not to commit suicide and burns all the certificates. He starts doing physical works of breaking bricks, selling things as a hawker and pulling carts and in this process, his financial situation improves and eventually he buys his own house and car. However, even at the peak of success, he remains depressed about the beloved who left him and wonders if she’ll ever return to him. Through his pain, he realises that the emotions he is undergoing are a part of life and a part of living in this world. Life is something precious that Almighty has given us and it is beautiful.
