Japanese consortium comprises--Sumitomo Corporation, Toshiba Corporation and IHI Corporation signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with state-owned Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Ltd (CPGCBL) for construction of a coal-fired thermal power plant and deep sea port at Matarbari in Cox’s Bazar.
The three-party consortium has already started the construction of 1,200 MW coal-fired power plant which is expected to be completed in July, 2024, a press statement said recently.
Modeled on Kashima Port in Japan, a coal-fired thermal power plant and a deep sea port are being constructed at designated sites on Matarbari Island in Cox’s Bazar, the statement added.
Using imported coal as fuel, this highly efficient ultra-super critical coal-fired thermal power plant will have generation capacity of 1,200MW.
The high efficiency ultra-super critical coal fired power plant equipment generates high pressure steam and temperatures that realise improved control of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and contributes to reducing environmental impact, which is Japan’s state of the art technology, it further said.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will finance in the project, and the total project cost will amount to 500 billion yen, which is the biggest amount ever for a single contract financed by JICA.
A branch office established in Dhaka in 2015 is supporting Toshiba in reinforcing its energy and infrastructure business in Bangladesh, the statement said.
