Ex-engineer held on graft charge
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday arrested a retired engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) in a graft case.
An ACC team, led by deputy director Abul Kalam Azad of its Comilla district office, arrested former executive engineer of DPHE's Feni office Shah Alam from Comilla town. The team detained Shah Alam around 7:30 pm and he will be produced before Comilla before court on Wednesday morning, Azad told UNB.
On July 24, 2017, the ACC filed a case against Shah Alam with Comilla Sadar Model Police Station for allegedly acquiring illegal wealth worth over Tk 83 lakh.

8 shops gutted in Comilla fire
Eight shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at Syed Ali Manson Market in Chandina upazila of Comillat early Wednesday. Fire service officials said the fire might be originated from an electric short circuit at a shop at 12:15 am and it soon engulfed the adjoining shops.
On information, two fire fighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after two hours of frantic efforts, said Comilla Fire Service Station deputy assistant director Farid Uddin. Two people, including a fireman, were injured while extinguishing the fire, he added.
The affected shops owners claimed that the extent of losses caused by the fire would be around Tk 30 lakh.

Warehouse catches fire in Savar
A fire broke out at a jhut (Garment rags) warehouse at Ashulia in Savar on Tuesday night.
Abdus Sobhan Azad, operator of Fire Service and Civil Defense control room, said the fire erupted at the warehouse around 11:35 pm. On information, nine units of fire fighters rushed to the spot and trying to douse the flame till filing this report at 1:50 am, said Azad, adding it is still not clear what actually caused the fire.

Arms seized from house of RU staff
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized two firearms, three bombs and some ammunition from the house of an employee of Rajshahi University (RU) and arrested two persons in this connection here Tuesday night.
The arrested persons were identified as Abu Raj Tuhin, an employee of steward section of RU and Rizu whose identity could not be known immediately, said RAB sources. On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid at the house of Tuhin located in Budhpara area in the city around 12 and recovered two foreign firearms, explosives and arrested the duo.

Orientation programme held
The students from high schools to all other higher seats of learning should remain alert about the misuse of information and communication technology (ICT) for their betterment, said an official of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP).
He opined that centring the misuse of ICT various forms of crimes are being witnessed in society creating grave concern. So, all students, parents and teachers concerned should come forward and work together.
